Psychotherapy & Counselling Central London
Simon Jacobs UKCP Reg, PG Dip, BA, MA
The prospect of meeting a therapist for the first time can cause anxiety.
You are welcome to call me for a preliminary chat or we can communicate via
email to discuss any concerns you may have before meeting face-to-face.

THE FIRST STEP
The decision to see a therapist/counsellor is a highly personal one. I always suggest an
initial meeting to discuss what it is you might want from therapy. This gives both myself and the
client an opportunity to evaluate whether we can work together and what might be the focus.
WHY SEE A THERAPIST?
People decide to see a psychotherapist or counsellor for a variety of reasons. A particular crisis
such as bereavement, redundancy, divorce or the end of a relationship can be the catalyst.
For others adjustments to life's struggles resulting in depression, anxiety, confusion, low
self esteem, addictions and anger/rage issues might lead an individual seek help. Some
people decide to embark on a journey of self discovery for less specific reasons such as a general
feeling of dissatisfaction or loss of meaning in life or as a response to life style changes
which have lead to eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse or stress and feeling burnt out.
PSYCHOTHERAPY, COUNSELLING, THERAPY - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
There seems to be no universally accepted definition of these terms, however, generally speaking Counselling tends be short term work focused on solving a particular problem presented while
Psychotherapy tends be longer term work involving a deeper exploration of the clients life and
the fixed beliefs and patterns that prevent a person from 'living life to the full'.
Therapy is really a shortened version of the word 'psychotherapy'.
